Help Constant rubbing noise?

I am getting a constant rubbing noise that sounds like a warped disc or dodgy propshaft. Has anyone else suffered from this problem?

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

Not a stone lodged in the disc brake by any chance, I'm always picking them up particularly after the roads have been re-surfaced.

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

This sounds like a similar thing I had with my GT.

Turned out a brake pad had somehow come loose.

Dealer reckoned I must have hit a kerb or something really hard to dislodge it.

Bearing in mind it was a rear wheel my response was 'bullsh*t, if I'd hit something hard enough to dislodge a brake pad I'd have a) remembered it and b) probably written the car off'. But I digress.

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

Is it a 'cylic' throbbing sound (almost like a wheel bearing).... reason I mention it as that tyres can become mis-shapen (like a 50p piece) and make just such a noise.

It has happened to me a couple of times.

You know what, it is, that makes sense The car was standing at portbury for 9 weeks so that could have happened

another possibility
Cheers

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

I'm going to my dealer tomorrow with the exact same problem. I will mention the tyre issue to him - it's the second time I go with the problem, and the first time he didn't find a solution. Thanks

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

Mine makes the same noise at low speeds - at the weekend a Saab 9-3 cabriolet drove slowly past me - and his Saab did it too!!!!!

My Ti is only a week old and does exactly the same, particularly noticable at low speeds. Not sure it is the tyres though as I noticed that the noise disappears when you depress the clutch.

Anyone got any ideas? It's booked in at the dealers for a week on Tuesday to get it and the windscreen rattle fixed.

Love the car but its a shame that Alfa couldn't fix what seems to be a common problem on the 159 during the factory shutdown.

That sounds exactly like mine - up to now I am avoiding the problem by not driving at low speeds.

Keep me posted on what the dealers say

Well, the dealer could not fix it. He heard it before but never succeeded to find a solution. He told me he had been in contact with the importer before, and it is a known problem on the 1.9 jtdm, and until now no solution. He mentioned something about the fuelpipes, and high pressure resonans???
i still think the sound comes from a rotating part as the sound is following the wheels rotation.
I really hope some of you guys solves the problem

Thanks for the top tip there Mike. Reminds me of a similar gem I saw in Viz some years ago: 'Avoid spending large amounts of money on expensive binoculars, simply stand closer to the object you wish to view'

Re: Constant rubbing noise?

I'm going in again tomorrow. I changed dealer because the place I bought the car is completely incompetent.
They are gonna change the right (don't know the name in english) driveshaft (I think) and maybe the right front wheel bearing.
I'll post the outcome here.

They changed the driveshaft, but it didn't help.
It was the tyres - switch the frontwheels to the back, and the noise is almost gone.
Actually I mentioned that issue to my former dealer, but apparantly he didn't check it.
So, in my world the problem is solved
Thanks alot for all your inputs

(If there isn't any weird noise in an Alfa, there's something wrong)

Since this thread started I can hear nothing but the bloody noise under about 30 miles an hour!
Definitely sounds to be in sync with wheel rotation, so I'm thinking wheel bearings, brake disc shields or even final drive........

Till then I am keeping above 30 with the radio on
