As somebody else put it, what a choice to make, alas I do feel I need to make one, for I can't have both
I'm really quite drawn to the diesel unit for it's punchy torque crazed feel but the 2.2 felt a better drive. Why am I so torn? Well I do about 70miles commute each day and then for the weekends I head into Wales, the Peak District, Lakes or Scotland to go climbing and walking. So when I'm on the weekends I like to drive a little, racking up around 20k a year for my drive
It's not so much outright speed, both will give me that at 3am in the mountain passes, it's the 35-40mph overtaking spurts etc.
So the 2.4 drives well, can envisage the short sections of welsh a and b roads now, pull out and go. The 2.2 feels like my mx5, you have to think about the overtake and wind it's nuts off. I'm coming out of an mx5 and a VAG 1.8 tuned octavia, the later being simlar to the diesel in bhp at 220 but much lighter and focused with dampers, arb's braces etc. The 2.2 feels better but seems to lack any get up and go??? I've been corrupted by turbos.
I've got a few questions about 56/07 2.2's and likewise the 2.4's. From searching on here it appears that the 2.2 brakes are not the same, is this correct?
Some minor niggles on seats and maybe the 2.4diesel on early models is not the best.
Also noting the comments on 2.4's eating tyres. Guess it will with that much weight, I can dial that out with climbing gear in the boot
Links or comments on other things to look for on early 2.4's would be aprpeciated. I'm curretnly musing over a 56 2.4 with a few options and 30k or a newer 07 2.2 with 3k for about the same money.
Given petrol and diesel prices I'm really torn, I already get through michelin pilot sports or nero's in 10k or so...
Any real world drivers notes on the above thoughts or have some views to help sway me one way or the other?
ps Either would will be remapped
pps anybody know if / where you can hire brera's for the weekends?
