Road Trip - Reading to Glasgow

Just had the chance to take my 159 1.9JTDm SW up to Glasgow and back to Reading the next day. This was my first 'getting to know you' experience in the car - only had it a month.

Good: Alfa 159 1.9JTDm
Because: If you've got a long way to go, good to be driving an alfa

Good: 70 litre tank
Because: nice to be only down to half after a long drive

Good: Cruise control
Because: love the way it disables on even the slightest nudge of the break pedal - v smooth

Good: Seat adjustment
Because: much better than my old Volvo, adjusts any which way, good support

Good: Bosch AeroTrim wipers
Because: Well, have you been to Scotland in August?(!)

Good: M6 Toll
Because: it's like motorways used to be - worth 4.50, no trucks

Good: Westmorland Farmshop Services (near Penrith) (northbound)
Because: what a view!

Good: It's a cruiser
Because: I wasn't expecting a refined motorway cruiser when I bought an alfa but am happily surprised it goes as well in straight lines as it does around the bends - joy!

Good: Auto intermittent wipers
Because: Think of them as part of the in-car entertainment - anything to keep you amused on a long trip is good

Good: Auto headlights
Because: when you're having too much fun, you don't need to remember to turn the lights on

Good: Maui Jim sunglasses
Because: these are the best upgrade I've made to my driving experience - brilliant, absolutely brilliant, not cheap but worth every penny.

Good: Rab Ha's Bar and Restaurant, Glasgow
Because: fun place and good food

Bad: Millennium Hotel Glasgow
Because: well, it wasn't bad, just disappointing for the money (100 per night) - rooms are dark on the back of the hotel, good views if you get a room on the front, dirty carpets and smelly toilet in my room.

Good: Going south on a Friday
Because: less traffic than going north

Bad: Going south on a Friday
Because: too much traffic on Fridays

Bad: Interior storage
Because: I haven't really found a comfy spot for my wallet and phone

Good: The little fridge-y thing in the armrest
Because: it did seem to actually work, even with the lid up, and kept my drink cool, nice surprise

Bad: Lancaster Services (Southbound)
Because: strange-looking people(?), ended up eating Burger King

Good: Sandbach Services (Southbound)
Because: normal-looking people(!), calm welcome cup of tea at Costa and a choice of armchairs

Bad: M42 on a Friday pm
Because: It cost me an extra hour - traffic

Good: Talking Heads
Because: Antidote to M42 on Friday pm (am I showing my age?)

Well, I could go on but that's enough for now. I'm really pleased with the car which did everything I asked of it (including giving me some fun vs. a BMW 330d coming off the roundabout halfway down the A404M) and more.

Next trip: Montreux in August

Sounds like you had a good trip. I have to say that Westmorland services are by far the best service station in the UK.

Lancaster Services and Sandbach! Weak bladder possibly???

I have just returned from a Liverpool to Bournemouth trip this weekend and apart from some strange noises, think I may be getting the dreaded windscreen problem plus my engine was a bit too rattley at times, she was perfect. Great ecconemy with some quite hard driving, great comfort, B&M was fantastic for both music and calls.
