Officially, the limit for 8-inch rims is 245mms. I have 255/40/18 however and everything is cool (I wanted some extra mms of clearance so as to avoid wheel damage on the pavements). You will also find that some manufacturers have slightly wider tyres for they same (quoted) width - for instance Pirelli P Zero Rosso is slightly wider compared to Michelins Pilot Sports. I currently use Continental Sport Contact 3 by the way. The difference in terms of comfort and noise compared to my previous Pirellis is quite big - without lagging behind in anything that I can tell of (ok, they look sort of boring). If comfort is your priority, I suggest that you check out the Contis
