Why is the 159 TI diesel economy so poor ?
I recently nearly purchased a 2.4JTD ti but was put off by the horror stories of people only getting 25mpg especially with the goverment happy to let fuel costs spiral out of control
I thought i'd go for the 1.9JTD and sacrifice a bit of power for some better economy.
Today i've had a 1.9Ti as a loan car and done about 40 miles of mixed driving - some urban some B roads at 50/60 Mph. For this sort of driving in my GT i'm getting about 40mpg and was hoping for something similar in the Ti
Don't get me wrong the car is lovely and far better put together than the GT but if felt heavier and therefore slower. For the main part of the day the average however was a shocking 29mpg and it was only on my drive home that it ticked over 30mpg to 30.1mpg for the day.
I'm only doing 6K miles a year so the extra fuel costs wouldn't exactly cripple me but it really is dissapointing to see the older sports coupe from Alfa returning 33% better economy than a newer family saloon albeit a sporty one.
Why does the 159 struggle so badly with economy ?
The 320D would probably have returned 45-50mpg for the same days driving. Ugly car yet great engine.
Still fancy one but if I was doing average miles i'd be well hacked off with that sort of return.
