On board computer consumption readings

Every now and then the on board computer consumption readings go crazy on my 159 1.9 jtdm, showing really unbelievable 20l/100km (12 mpg!) while doing 40 kmh in 3rd. If I even touch the gas pedal, it goes all the way up to a 50l/100km (5 mpg). The only thing that cures it is, pull over, turn off the engine, then turn on again and everything is back to normal. Anyone had that?

BTW, overall consumption seems normal, i get around 700km per tank doing mostly short urban runs.

Re: On board computer consumption readings

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) causes the fuel consumption to drop to really low values whilst its regenerating. (Iit uses the extra fuel to increase the exhaust temp to clean it - the exhaust gets really hot)

By switching the engine off and back on again you will be cancelling the regeneration - which is something you definately shouldn't be doning as it could cause it to get blocked - there is a warning light for when its partially blocked.

Apparently occasional bouts of spirited driving are needed to keep it clear
