Alfa Spider guzzling oil

Hi all,

Great to see an Alfa dedicated forum. I have an immaculate 1997 Spider which until recently was my pride and joy. However I have noticed that it is drinking oil like George Best drinking vodka on St. Patrick's day. It sometimes omits excessive blue smoke when starting up or driving slowly; however sometimes it hardly omits any smoke. Only today I started her up and drove home from work with no smoke at all; will it be an automatic MOT emissions failure? if it was the valve seals then surely it would be leaking and burning oil all of the time, not just some of the time? cheers

Re: Alfa Spider guzzling oil

It'll have to burn oil at an excessive rate to fail a MOT, at some point the oil consumption will finish the catalytic converter of, but have an indie garage do a 4 gas test, before subjecting your bella to the mercy of an ignorant MOT certified garage.

At the end of the day, you may have to have a garage rebuld the engine with new seals and piston rings
