Not wanting to reignite the usual petrol Vs diesel debate, but today I had the chance to spend some time with a 2.2JTS Spider, whilst my JTDm model was in for a service.
It was a 57 reg model, in (Touring?) Grey with the 18" multispokes - I thought the colour was great! and even the Alfatex interior didnt detract too badly from the experience.
Ive driven a 2.2 in a 159 and on that occasion I thought it was lousy, however I think it made a slightly better case for itself in the Spider.
Pulling away as we all know is a bit of a disaster, either lots of revs or lots of kangarooing!
It sounds nice between 2-4000rpm but above that in my opinion its quite harsh sounding - no where near as nice as my TS.
Its smooth enough and performance is OK at best, I really missed the diesel shove, especially for nipping in and out of traffic. Brakes, although smaller than those on the 2.4 did well enough and had good feel.
Overall I can only give the JTS 6/10. Its OK, medicore, middle of the road. Just not enough sparkle for a petrol Alfa engine. I still prefer petrols of diesels, but not this 2.2 over the 2.4.
Next I need to try a V6 and then the list is complete
