As an ex 159 owner I can vouch for these experiences as being part of the fun!
If you are buying a car, and if it has sat around for a few weeks or longer, can I seriously suggest that you take it on a loooong journey on the motorway or dual carriage way in 4th? At least 15 minutes.
This will bring the car up to temperature and should induce a DPF regen. If you watch the mpg you will see it plummet as the regen starts, keep the revs about 3K until the mpg figure heads back up.
If you don't do this, there is a chance the engine will part regen, causing the computer to put the car in limp mode. And this is no fun at all!
I experienced this after the car had some bodywork done, so was not driven for over a week. I jumped in and headed off on a 200 mile journey at sedate motorways speeds, and got the limp mode and CEL. Pants.
After this has been done, a good thrashing once a fortnight should help the situation!
Its not just us, Audi have had the same issues with the 2.0tdi engines since 2004. A friend had a new A3 with this engine, all sorts of stuttering issues, lack of power, the dealer told him it just needs a good thrash once in a while! Wise words Mr Audi man....
