wow, thats not good - I must say the roof mechanism is one of the few things on mine that hasn't gone wrong over the last year (although the frame twisted at one point and the fabric had to come off to realign it.)
Looks like you might be getting a reasonable solution from the dealer now, which is a good thing - but just in case dont accept anything less than a like-for-like replacement.
As an example of how good a dealer can be HR Owen have taken a sale car out of the show room for me so that I can have a decent loaner for the week.
It must be said that faults such as this ARE forgivable, but its generally the service you receive afterwards that gets your back up.
I hope your Spider isnt a lemon - the first problems on mine also reared their head in the first week or so.
