It's nothing to do with being first to the market. I don't believe you can equate consumer electronics with cars. Generally the trend in car prices is upward. I suppose this is just a promotional thing.
Go to Alfa's configurator website and specify a carbonio black 2.2JTS spider with 18" wheels, black/grey leather, blue and me, visibility pack - comes to £28.5K.
Now look at the price of the limited edition - similar spec, if not slightly better, specified at £25.5K.
Yeah, I suppose these limited specials do come along now and then to grab the attention of new customers, and to pee off the loyal customers, and I should know better by now. Still annoys me, and I reserve that right!
That said ... I will never buy a NEW alfa again.
Oggy I respect your right to get the hump, itís a basic human need (except for wives and girlfriends who should be happy all the time)
I actually think consumer electronics and the cars we are talking about do have a similar sales profiles and demographics.
True re the configurator, I actually had an order placed for the 2.4 spider with a few bits it came to £460 a month! Saw the promotion post from Piccadilly, cancelled said order and gave David Whitton a deposit for the 2.2 uber offer! ( I know that doesnít help you, sozÖ)
Though I totally agree about BUYING; I'd never buy new (or pre-owned) and have not for the past 8 years. I private lease instead as I don't get exposed to the issues of 'offer cars', promotions and market trends.
Take my current car for example, itís a VW Touareg V6 altitude a fab if rather large car that was all the rage when I got it. Would cost 47K to buy with all the toys I have on it, but I leased it at 550 quid a month. The car is going back to the lease company at the end of this month and because of whatís happened re tax, fuel costs and general anti 4x4 stuff itís now worth 22-24K tops, the leasing Co have therefore lost around 10K that, had I bought the car, would have been my loss!!!
Bringing that back to Alfas; my lease will cost £350 per month over 2 years actually 28 months of payments) thatís £9800, will a 25K spider be worth £15,000 in 2 years time? Almost certainly (I would hope because I have the option to buy it). but even if not, Iíve nothing to worry about, I just give it back, plus I donít have to part ex it or stick it in Autotrader and entertain a bunch of Sunday tire kickers...
Leasing is a mindset thing, the way I see it is that I spend an amount of money per month to get my bum in a car. In real terms we all do that but for some reason tying up our cash via a purchase seems to make most of us feel more comfortableÖ.I blame Thatcher
So I agree, never buy an Alfa againÖ Lease one insteadÖ
