First Time Alfa Owner - what have I done
Thought I would very briefly say hello, and indeed how I found this forum. I'm one of those people who has loved cars since I was a kid, have always admired Alfa Romeo but like many was put off by the reputation of old, indeed a friend of mine bout an Alfasud when we were at collage and I think I recall him catching the bus more than I did.
Anyhow, last week I suddenly decided I was going to buy a spider, I remember sending off for the brochure when they first came out but gave in to my mind and ended up buying a Porsche Cayman. To cut a long story short I had to dispose of that after a year as a new business needed some capital and ended up running around in a Fiat 500 for six months. Well, that was never going to last and after much thinking I decided I would just go for it and but a Spider. Ended up putting a deposit in a black 2.2 with just 4k on the clock, I had seen on the net - remember I had never even sat in one let alone driven it, so last bank holiday Sunday armed with a pile of cash I set off on my 240 mile round trip to collect it.
Having completed all the usual paperwork, had the car fuelled up I hopped in, put down the hood and hit the road to home. Got as far as the first roundabout and almost had my first crash in 20 years. Car just kangarooed into the traffic - I assumed I had dome something stupid and thought perhaps it has a manual choke (well, its Italian right!). But no, no choke to be found so decided it was because the engine was still not warm, so set off on my way. Rest of journey was uneventful, though was surprised at how modest the cars performance was, had expected it to have more urge, to be honest even my wife's diesel S Type feels more powerful, but I decided that perhaps I was comparing it to the old Cayman and at least fuel consumption was going to be better. Boy was I wrong. So, while I love the car, it clearly was not what I had expected. The annoying flat spot seems to come and go, or possibly I have learnt to drive around it, but clearly this is not ideal. Spoke to man dealer in Cardiff and they had never heard of the problem so googled it and hey presto - here I am. So, have car booked in tomorrow at a place just outside Bristol for a re-map, guy said he knew of the issue and had done about four other 2.2 alfas, was quoted £280, and en extra tenner to fit a K&N filter (one came with car, can see why it was never fitted - or rather I can't see where it shodl be fitted) so fingers crossed. Will let you know how it goes. Regards, kez
