Re: 1.9 Jtdm v 2.2 JTS back to back comparison
I always thought I'd own a petrol car and would never buy a smelly, noisy, slow, 'old man' diesel.
I used to have a nice little 'N'-reg (1996) Rover 214SEi, I loved that car, was my everything, nice little red thing with half-leather seats and was pokey as anything, but of course, like all little cars with little engines, lacked top-end.
Well, upon landing a new and high paying job, it came time to 'update' the ol' motor. I had a look around at the usual suspects, Audi's, BMW's, Volvo's etc. But, I came to the conclusion that the 156 was such a striking car and a bargain considering at 3 years old they are going for between £5k and £8k (mine was £6.5k ((sorry this story seems to be going on for ages)))
Anyways, after testing a 2.0JTS and then driving a 1.9JTD there was no choice in it, had to be the JTD as the power was immense and it was so easy to drive and a joy to throw about, where as the JTS was hard work keeping the revs high enough to be of use, there is no fun in strangling a car all the time, maybe every now and then when you got a clear road, but not through a town or going back an forth to work.
I'll stick by my smelly, noisy, slow, 'old man' diesel now, and besides, getting an average of 52mpg beats the 30mpg I was getting out of my rover hands down. And to top it off, the road tax is the same for both cars!
