My Brera 2.4 210 has had the following carried out to resolve smoking issues:
Cleaned out the EGR & checked that the valve is free.
Removed and cleaned MAP sensor.
Checked (visually) glow plugs & cleaned - could not actually test.
Fitted the orifice type blanking plates to the EGR.
The car still smokes for a few short seconds on start up & idles horribly until you get going, after which it's back to normal.
My question is, if one or more of the glow plugs were to blame would you not get an error on the screen similar to when they are unplugged?
What else could it be as it's very annoying???
It's more of a white/grey - it's not oil or water as I'm losing neither, oil level is solid as is the water.
It's definitely exhaust gases on start up & guessing unburnt diesel due to glow plugs?
My question is would you get a fault on the screen if the glow plugs were failing/playing up?
Could be a dribbling fuel injector. Had that on a diesel van and was very surprised that the smoke was really quite white. Even the Mechanic thought it was water but a new injector fixed it in the end.
I have the exact same thing at the moment. Paired with a rattling noise under load between 1200-2300rpm. I am about to change an injector that I think is suspect so will let you know.
I checked my injectors for noise.
Get a very long screw driver or similar.
Put the handle end to your ear and the other end onto the plastic tops of the injectors one at a time.
Get someone to hold the revs around 1800rpm and see if any are noticeably louder
So far I have -
Cleaned and checked EGR & fitted the plates with holes as recommended.
Cleaned the MAP sensor.
Replaced glow plugs with new Breu 156.5mm length.
Checked as far as possible injectors (sound & look okay)?
In the process of discussing the 'Software mod' with local Alfa garage - By the way, they have never heard of these problems before!! That's worrying.
Still getting smoke for a couple of seconds on start up - What else could it be, stumped now for sure?
I don't think there's a problem with any of the turbo hoses but would/could this give a similar issue??
I got the update on mine & removed the issue totally 3 years ago. A lot of garages has surprisingly never seen any issue on any model before...Wonder if marketing could be involved here so you believe you have been ufortunate enough to have a one in a million-fault on their perfect brand ;-)
Did the new plugs cure the erratic idling so now only smoke left as issue?
Are you sure the EGR actually works, eventhough you cleaned it?
It might be worth you trying adding a little 2 stroke oil to the diesel (300ml to £30 diesel)for a week or so as this may help if you have a sticky dirty injector.
I did have a message on my 1.9 when the glow plus were iffy but as on these they were not expensive I changed all of them just to be sure.
I think if you connect the diagnostic to the car you can run a check to tell you if they are bad or which one. The same with the injectors.
If you sealing is tight and she runs perfect know, why not leave it as is? It is a major job to remove the inlet & if your happy, save the hassle & money..At least to the day where the cambelt/waterpump needs changing anyway.
The cam belt was done in Jan 2017, not sure if they did the water pump though??
My thoughts were to get it done and do the water pump just in case, I have a receipt for the cam belt kit but no mention of a water pump - How often do they need changing???
It is most often the waterpump that seizes when cambelt breaks, so its very important to get the pump changed with the belt
