Going to get a service done on my car soon so I have a good benchmark of where I am with it
What oil and filters do people suggest? I have been recommended Fuchs Titan GT1 5w40 oil. Has anyone ever tried Millers Nanodrive with its amazing MPG and lubrication claims?
C'mon. Castrol Magnatec- it is typical high volume product available at nearly every petrol station. Most of the price is probably adverts everywhere, rather than quality product.
Good and popular? Motul, can't remember if most recommended for 2.4 is X-cess or X-clean 5W40 - check on manufacturer website. Fuchs manufactures also good products, though I do not know (never tried) their engine oils. Liquyi Moly Toptec 4100 another alternative.
Want better? Penrite Envio+ 5W40 C3 or someting from Millers (check which one is recommended). All these if you have still DPF, as if not, then there is plenty of trully synthetic oils (vs hydrocracked called by some manufacturers as synthetic, by others as synthese technology) are like Liqui Moly I think it is Diesel Synthoil 5W40 the right one (I'm writing based on my best remembered infos from Polish forum, I'm not 2.4JTDM user and so can't remember exactly all names/brands).
Regarding filters, UFI was used in factory (just with Fiat/AR/Lancia logo), other good ones e.g. MANN, Knecht.

Cheers for all the info bud I will have a look at the Motul X-Clean and the Millers stuff. Some of those things you said I can't find very well in England.
My plan basically is to change the oil my self about 2000 miles before the service is due. I'll use cheap basic oil and a new filter. Run that through for 2000 miles and then get it changed with some really good quality stuff I know oil additives have been used and those things are dreadful to an engine if left in and I know these engines have issues with draining out 100% of the oil meaning quite a bit of oil additive is probably still in there.
yeah, just earlier today I leared that 2.4 has oil radiator/cooler (at least in Polish spec cars), and so people can't easily drain out more than 5L of oil, so ~1L of the old one still stays in engine. I guess it should be possible also to sink somehow. alternative you plan sounds also reasonable, though I wouldn't use cheapest oil, as anyway say that 1L will stay there. At least in Poland, Motul is way cheaper than Millers, maybe this is one to go for first change?
I would always use genuine filters, especially the oil filter, along with the best quality oil.
I work for one of the VW Group Trade Parts Specialists centres, and a year or so ago we decided to carry out bit of an experiment. We took two filters, a genuine VW filter, and a Mann (supposedly OE Spec) filter, from a well known car parts supplier. We opened up both filters to see how much filtration material was in each filter.
It was quite a surprise to see how much more filtration material was in the Genuine filter as opposed to the so called OE spec one from Mann. Yes the Mann one was cheaper, but only by 10 to 12 pence.
So the more filtration material, the more crap it's taking out of your oil.
With regards to Castrol oil, I've been selling it for years in one guise or another. I used to run my Alfa 156 JTD 16v on it with no problems. It didn't use much either between services. I still run my current car on it too. I know there are other oils that may be better, but there's a lot worse. It's quite shocking what rubbish some garages put into customers car's, just because it's cheap!
My advice would be when taking your car for a service, ask what brand of oil they use! There is a brand if you can call it that, which from what I understand is a recycled/ used oil, which is for some reason is quite popular with Independent garages. I would pretty annoyed if that was put in my car.

in my experience many OEM filters are MANN though, i use MANN exclusively and have never seen a problem with them. just because there may have been more (or less) material in doesnt mean that it was any better or any worse at doing its job, although i get where the logic is.
So for my cheap running through oil. Mann filter and the cheapest dpf friendly oil I can find. Then drain that after 2000 miles. Then get some motul x-clean and a fiat filter and use that for the proper change.
I have used budget oils and even on occasion got a couple of 5L bottles in Lidl (up to BMW spec apparently on bottle). As long as its ACEA A3/B4 spec as required in the car manual I am happy.
It seems to last ok for the 18k mile service - car oil degradation counter down to about 30%. However I often change the oil at 10-12k miles.
Oil filter I use is spurious one also. Once I didn't bother to change the filter on an oil change and the next time the filter was slightly buckled, so I won't do that again. When its a paper filter as in the 159 1.9 diesel its not going to last that long I suppose. If your using spurious parts you cannot push out the service interval and need to err on the side of caution, but in general I have no problem.
Spurious fuel filter leaked on me once too; had to get the Fiat one in the end
Tripple QX for me (fully synthetic), changed every 6 months regardless of mileage. For me 18k is far, far to long between changes regardless of the type or brand of oil. The cheaper stuff changed more regularly is just as good if not better for the engine in my opinion. Additional, I change the oil filter every other service (every 12 months).
