Re: 159 Petrol or Diesel?
Up to date the diesel 2.4 has proved the most reliable of the Alfa cambelt engines. It has a pretty good record, and the cam belt usually lasts the specified period, though most do them at 60,000 miles (72 is the specified life)....not something you can say of the TS petrol engines sad to day.
I would however agree with the conclusion that the 2.2 petrol is the better bet as I am a hater of cambelts, and in addition there is the real possibility that you may need to buy a turbo at some stage in the life of the car. Nothing to do with being an Alfa..its the nature of turbos that they fail from time to time.
I'd still recommend you go and drive a turbo diesel just to try one...I do detect some anti diesel comments that are not really fair..they really are cracking good engines. You have to live with one for a bit to truly appreciate that it is quite possible to use the term 'Sports saloon' and 'diesel' in the same breath.
