I've been using Rhino for about 2 years now and definitely see the usual benefits in my 2.4 - quieter idle, slightly improved MPG and less smoke.
However a mate uses some Hydra Cetane Booster which is about a third of the price and says it does the same. He has an ageing BMW 330d.
Is there anything other than cetane booster that Rhino actually does?
I have done some research on this, and it seems that if you have a DPF this isn't a good idea as the extra ash from the oil will cause it to fail sooner. Unlike carbon/soot ash cannot be removed and the DPF will need to be replaced.
I can't see how it would harm a non-DPF car though.
I have been running Millers Eco max in my G for the last couple of weeks.
I have noticed no difference whatsoever, so IMO it is a waste of money.
I have tried Rhino and to be honest I have never noticed any difference, maybe my expectations are too high. I used Shell super duper stuff recently for the first time and again I did not notice any difference and my average MPG actually fell. Go figure.
There was a massive thread covering this subject a couple of years ago, it mentioned Rhino, Millers - my favourite, 2 stroke oil and several other snake oils.
Well worth a read if you've got half a day to waste.
Just picking up on a comment by Verbout regarding injector cleaner, yes I think that's a good idea but as a matter of course I never use supermarket fuels. As I understand it the "brands" use additives to do that job.
If I recall the discussion on the thread I mentioned above (I'm not going to read it) wasn't it the high ash content in the 2 stroke oil that was the issue? And didn't someone point out you can get low ash 2 stroke.
According to that link the Ash isn't the only issue.
It also causes other deposits elsewhere in the engine including the injectors.
Anyone who had had the pleasure of decoking a 2 stroke petrol engine will know what sort of crap is produced when two stroke oil is burned.
The mineral stuff tends to burn more and produces carbon/ash. The synthetic stuff doesn't burn as well and tends to come out of the exhaust more as wet oil.
At least if you use the synthetic stuff your exhaust won't rust as much on the inside.
I used 2 stroke oil in my 1.9 159 for the 5 years and 60k miles that I had it and it was running quieter and smoother when I sold it oñ 125k than when I bought it, I ocasionally didnt use it and it was noticably louder, not that there was anything wrong with it.
It was always well below the mot smoke limit.
I used the mineral oil as it mixes better and used the green rather than the red as if would avoid any explaining if I got pulled and the tank dipped
I've used BP premium wherever possible and Rhino for a while... Since the beginning of September I've just used premium and my 2.4 is way less smokey now. Still a bit under hard acceleration, but with Rhino in the tank is was properly embarrassing.
