I have a 159 SW 1.8mpi (not a real Alfa I know!).
It has a noise which I am fairly certain is the intermediate or carrier bearing on the O/S (driver side on a RHD car) driveshaft.
I can't find much information about it suffice to say that what I did find suggested that it cannot be replaced individually, its a whole new driveshaft required. Anyone been there, done that? Or has anyone managed to grease it sufficiently to reduce the noise/extend the bearing life?
Do you mean the carrier bearing or the spider joint?
If it's the spider then be very cautious of aftermarket remanufactured shafts. Tempting prices but they fail very easily (I know from experience) and the "warranty" they offer is a bit of a con.
The bearing can be bought from shop4parts. That'll get you a 'birth' third-party item.
But the problem is when the bearing is going it takes the tulip (the cup it sits in) with it. So just replacing the joint can be a false economy.
I've bought new and don't regret it (but it is expensive). Alternatively, Alfa do sell reconditioned shafts too.
Don't know what these are like though. Maybe someone else has experience of them.
Thanks for the info, I was actually referring to the carrier bearing, not the CV joint you describe, but it does make me think it could be that but it doesn't sound like a typical CV joint failure.

Hi I have a drive shaft / bearing related noise on my 2.4 ti ( o/s front) - I have had the cv joint re-packed with some moly grease which has quieten it somewhat. I haven't looked at the intermediate bearing yet - what are your symptoms ?
Cheers
Hard to describe, its a whirring noise that increases with speed and remains in all gears and when coasting out of gear. It's not a knocking like a CV joint going. But I don't think its the gearbox because it comes from under my feet, and I don't think the 1.8 gearbox is prone to usual troubles, is it?
I have replaced 2x spiders bearing with my 22JTS at 70k kms.
Both were split while been taken off. Not sure if it is OK just to grease it.
Anyway aftermarket part number is 3403 made of BIRTH.
Could be also needed 207105546*rubber casing.
One of two above items is supplied with a lot of grease... Not sure which one though...
Numbers are to checked for compartability.
With my problem on the 159 any vibration is wholly road speed dependent - if you lift off the throttle the noise doesn't change. The noise is the same whether or not the drive is engaged. I've fitted a new set of tyres. I've had a drive shaft fail on the n/s a couple of years ago but this feels different. I wondered if the cv race has slightly flatten ball bearings - the roads around here are shocking and I've had a cracked wheel on the n/s but this problem is on the off side.
Bearing failure is odd on the 159. It just sounds like a growing whine as the speed increases but otherwise it feels fine. In the latter stages of the failure you can induce a noise variation by loading the offending wheel. But you have to be very heavy handed and weave down a very wide road. The noise will get louder on the failed side as the suspension compresses.
I've finally got to the bottom of my wheel noise - one rear off side bearing exhibiting the whine - now fixed - but it looks like the other 3 are coming to the end of their lives - no movement as yet in the hub but feel a bit rough. The car has done 153k miles so I shouldn't be too surprised given the atrocious state of the roads around here.
