Potential 2.4 owner

Hi all

I'm considering a 159 2.4 diesel, have never owned a diesel car before, but have had alfas for many years, 156s and 147, so am familiar with their funny little quirks. I have seen one but on speaking to the seller he says the egr valve has an issue, everything else about the car seems ok, recent belt, service, long test, no lights on on dash, etc. The question I am pondering, and hope someone could answer, is whether it is safe to drive home with potentially faulty egr valve (will be 130 ish miles all motorway driving) and what to watch for.

Thanks

depends what he calls an issue. mine had an issue this week that left me on the back of a truck. all fixed now and runs a treat. knock 300 off the asking price.

Like you I know sweet FA about Diesels so I cannot answer your question, but I tend to agree with bigjim, knock a few quid of the price, get a kit from eBay and delete the EGR completely. I have had mine removed and its a vast improvement, and one less thing to worry about.

Depending where you are Autolusso do an egr delete service for 150. Alternatively alfa will sell you a new EGR for 2-300 plus fitting, so use that in your bargaining, but remember if it's been letting soot in the DpF it could be affected too

If the EGR jams open it could cause a problem driving home. You could always buy an EGR blanking plate, only cost a few quid and take it with you, as long as you have the tools to install it, there is bound to be a guide on here some where.

Knock 300 off the price, 100 to have it towed to Autolusso, 150 to blank and delete. 50 for the inconvenience.

Thanks everyone for your advice, have decided to leave it as on pressing him further found out a lot of black smoke coming of exhaust under acceleration. Have been told this could be split boost pipe, stuck injectors or turbo so not worth driving it distance, will wait for another one to come along and will blank egr, sort dpf and get a remap when I get one, if not already done.

Just a thought, but if it has already has EGR blanked and DPF removed, that could be why it was producing black smoke under hard acceleration?

He said it hadn't been done, and that it was his mechanic who said it needed replacing. Have managed to find another one now, was a lot closer than 130 miles away too.
