Bad news.. What's it worth now???

My beloved Alfa 159 2007 diesel...it's time has come..

Within the last 3000 miles: new turbo, EGR cooler, EGR valve, oil and filter change, air filter, radiator flush...

Today, diagnosed with damaged gearbox, and needing a new subframe.. Plus VAT... Plus labour... Approximate 3000 to fix.

What now?! I was offered 300 for it.

Oh what to do... Thoughts ?

Break it perhaps if you have the time and space?
You will recover more than a poultry 300 that way.
What a nuisance!

There are a few places that repair the m32 box with it still in place for around 350. A & S Clutch Technology in Halifax is well thought of in the vauxhall world and a used subframe is a few hundred quid, you could clean it up and treat it yourself and get it fitted at the same time as the box is fixed.
So it'll cost 5 or 600 quid,a bit of a kick in the teeth but better than selling it for scrap.

These people on Canvey Island know their stuff when it comes to the M32 gearbox. Unless it's completely wrecked you should be able to get it sorted..

Not sure about the subframe cost but shouldn't be that bad..

The car's got to be worth at least 4 grand in decent working order so a grand on repairs has got to be worth it..

Oil & Filter 50 do it yourself.
Sub-frame - New / Used 400-750 (Scrap yard job, 200?)
EGR - Deleted, de-swirled 150
Damaged Gearbox repair 350
Reconned Turbo - 600?
Total 1300-1750.

With all that done, I reckon, without needing a new clutch that it would be good for a few more years.

....and, you'd need to shell out a decent wedge on another car anyway, so repair and keep it until end of life.

I've known Mercs to need their entire suspension re-doing after two springs broke down pot holed roads, cost 1400 to fix. I don't think your Alfa is dead, it just needs some long needed TLC. If it needs a new sub frame the rust must have gone beyond what is deemed repairable. Turbo, Clutch, gearbox are the big 3 imho for the 159, it's a bummer two hit at once, but if you sort it, you'll be good for a long while. What happens if you get a new motor and something major happens costing 1000? Afterwhich you may then need even more work to be carrier out afterwards.

I've just got a quote off them for replacing all the bearings in my M32, cost is 599 inc VAT. That seems pretty good, I just rang another company (I won't name but have seen them recommended on here) and they quoted me 1320 + VAT and said would need the car for 4 days!

Why is there always such a massive difference in prices?!?!

ifvyou govfor gearbox repair, consider putting 2.8l of oil (0.5l more than official spec), that is considered as must on many opel/alfa forums. m32 suffers for poor oiling of working elements, and more oil is believed to help in this case. some recommend fuchs as bit better oil than tutella. and one more, some (eg me) added 0.2l of archoil 9ar100 oil additive to the oil (so 2.6l of oil)

Just to update on my own post! Had another quote from a local company, they said 1500 + VAT.

Is there any reason why the place in Kent is so much cheaper? They appear to have a lot of positive feedback on this forum so I'm not suggesting they're anything but good, but how come a third of the price?!

My local transmission specialist quoted 600 + VAT for repair, or about twice that if it's gone bang and a recon 'box needs to be fitted.

The place on Canvey Island seem to really know the M32 gearbox. I suppose after you've done hundreds of them you can turn them around quicker..
