Looking at a 2008 159 JTS TI 2.2 petrol

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and had a couple of questions. I'm looking at buying my 3rd Alfa. The last one I had was a Alfasud 1.5TI nearly 30 years ago. Alfas have changed a bit since then. The one I'm going to see is in great condition with average miles for it's age, has lots of history and it looks like it has been well looked after. The seller is very honest and he has said the car has thrown up an engine management light a few times and it has gone into limp mode for about 30 minutes each time and then it cleared and restored to full power. Does anyone have an idea what this could be and if so is it an expensive fix.

Cheers

No fault codes showing, mechanic reckons it could be battery or alternator??

I am sorry. Battery or alternater never creates a limp mode.
Once you have succeeded to start car battery is nothing to do. You may have a problem with a next start only.
Alternator may not be productive enough or even faulty and you would get a battery problem as above.
Not quite honest I reckon.

+1. My thoughts exactly.
If there's doubt, forget it.

The only time my 2.2 has turned on the EML in 6 years was due to the timing chain stretch issue.
Apparently they can go into limp mode because of this, but mine never did.
About 500 to sort usually.

The EML wouldn't come on without storing a code.
I suspect the mechanic's reset (deleted) it.

My advice would be to find one that has no obvious issues.

Nice to know what is limp mode exactly mean.
If you unplug EGR socket at 19JTDM you would get definite restriction. Car actually moves but not drives.
I have 80k kms ( 50k miles ) 22JTS and I have never feel anything similar.
Hei OP. Insist failure codes.
