159 side indicator

Just got my first Alfa. It had a missing side indicator plastic cover panel, although the bulb was still in and working at the time. Ordered new unit (pair) and whilst replacing noticed that the connector was wet (it had rained). New unit in, not working, old unit back in, not working, both bulbs OK. Checked voltage at connector and by stripping wires, before connector, none, checked earth side at connector to battery earth, zip. Both right side indicators, front and back OK and flashing at normal rate (which should be faster when a bulb blows). Does the switch operate on live and earth?
Without a wiring diagram/workshop manual I'm stuck and the MOT is next month.
I could parallel wire to the front indicator but I'd rather solve the problem, any ideas please?
