Hmmm Alfa 159 2.4 JTDm Qtronic issue?

Hi, I've been having a major problem with my 2007 159. When the engine gets upto operating temperture, it has an issue changing between 2nd and 3rd gear. It seems to disengage the second gear and fails to shift up into third for a couple of seconds. In this time the revs go up quickly and then the gear engages with a violent thud.

The car currently has 123000 km on it and was last serviced at 109. I bought it from a dealer just over a month ago, and have had it checked twice. Once by Automoda through the dealer in Sydney, and the other by an auto trans specialist. Both couldn't find/replicate the problem and told me no faults pop up from the ECU. The auto specialist told me the ECU might need to be reprogrammed.

Currently have it with the NRMA to see if they can find it but I don't have much hope. The problem isn't constant and it only occurs when the engine has been running for a while and it really comes out during heavy, slow traffic where it is constantly changing between 2nd and 3rd. It also occurs on the 'manual' mode. The only way I've tried to prevent the problem is to let off the accelerator between the second and third gear change to let the revs drop down before it engages.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and how did they get it fixed??

The first port of call with an auto box problem is usually to change the hydraulic oil. Has this been done?

As far as I know, the only thing that was done to it was replacing the transmission fluid. However I can't be totally sure because a report was not retrieved by my car dealer for me (partially why I am doing several second opinions)

Has the car been remapped? A heavy remap (and with it exuberant driving) might be raising the gearbox oil above its optimum temperature.....the issue you describe could be attributed to the gearbox oil overheating.....it's one of the symptons.

The car was completely stock as far as I know. Just an update also. The car was returned from the NRMA and deemed unsafe to drive. The engine conked out several times while they were inspecting it, and they also found torn bushes and a split engine mount.

Looks like I bought a lemon
When it s put into reverse and the brakes are applied slightly to control speed, the engine shudders and eventually turns off. They also found that the engine oil had been overfilled but I doubt that is the cause.

It's currently with a mechanic, so hopefully they can find the cause of the issue and quote the dealer for the repair.

You need to take it back to the dealer you bought it from, depending on the consumer laws where you are they should have to put it right or refund you, dont know what the nrma is but there report should hold some weight with thedealer
