Hi am having trouble with my 159 starting. I thought it may have been a problem with the fuel cut our switch and have had it replaced, but the car sometimes still does not start. What happens is when I start the car the engine turns over ok, but is not firing. If I leave and go back to it an hour later, it usually start first time, but recently it now seems to take up to three hours to start.

Another intermittent problem I seem to be having starting this week is a lack of power in reverse, first and second gear. The turbo gauge doesn't seem to be rising when this happens. Just before christmas I had the same problem and the garage changed the ERV (exahust something valve) which seemed to sort the problem for a short while, but the problem seems to be back. Can anyone help please?

For those looking at this car my wife drives all over the Scottish Borders on a daily basis in it. Not great roads but still avg's around 50mpg.

Any update on this problem would be really good because mine is doing the exact same thing. Every now and then (perhaps 1 in 20 starts) when I go to start the car, the engine turns over but no ignition. Done it 3 times in the last fortnight; never a problem before this. Has always been in the morning with a cold engine. I can try 10 times in a row but no success. But if I leave it, go back in a few hours, then often it will start. Mine's a 159 2.4JTDm.

Initially I thought it might be the glow plugs; but all 5 failing at once? Seems unlikely; and besides when individual plugs have failed before I've had a dashboard message saying something like "Glow plugs not available". Also if it were the glow plugs I would expect that cold mornings would struggle more than warmer mornings. Seems no link to me.

I've also taken off and reattached the common rail diesel control wires just in case it's a connection issue, but again, no difference.

Is there any other sensor that would interrupt either the glow plugs or the injectors?

Any suggestions would be good. Sadly the appearance of this problem has just caused us to cancel our family half-term holiday for fear of getting stuck . The car's booked into the garage but only for next week as this week was fully booked; too late to save our holiday.

Hi
Just collected from the garage having had the camshaft sensor replaced. On testing the crankshaft sensor all the resistances were ok. managed to get one for around £40 from sales@wanapart.co.uk Drove beatifully down the A7 had to follow a cop though last 10 miles think it took longer than the previous 25.
Thanks for all the help

Update 2 days later starting problem returns. Bought a Crankshaft sensor £25 brand new on ebay. Service from sellor was fantastic. Here is his email address panterasteve@btinternet.com Hopefully now get back to trouble free motoring.

Considering changing timing belt. Car now 5 years old but only 34,000 miles. Cost qouted is about £700 any thoughts from anyone would be appreciated?

Based on the number of spelling mistakes and distinct lack of punctuation in all your posts...I wouldn't worry...if we were going to tear you apart we would have done by now!

After putting my car in the garage, the item I eventually elected to have replaced was the Fuel Pressure Regulator (one of about 8 different things that could explain the symptoms). I have no idea if this will cure my starting problem (I need more time to become confident) but changing it seems to have cured my engine hesitation that I have had for 4 years when accelerating lightly.
