Get Engine checked light and engine cut out at 80mph - not impressed !

Travelling back from Chester Zoo today doing 80mph in the fast lane and engine warning light came on then the car lost all power.

I had my wife and 2 children in the car so i'm far from impressed. Luckily i managed to avoid disaster by freewheeling into the hard shoulder.

On restarting power returned but warning light still in place - any ideas ?

2yr old 1.9Ti with 12K on the clock.

Up until that point the car had performed admirably for the 200mile round trip and even returned a non too shabby 49mpg according to the computer...

If i was a rep doing big miles this sort of thing would really ****** me off but it's the 1st time i've seen it at speed and it's pretty frightening.

DPF/EGR/Injectors/Inletmanifold etc etc. Usually diesel stuff, needs to be plugged in for a code reading. Have you had it remapped?

Could be the map causing the emission control systems to flip. Does it get good runs, especially given the low miles?

Did it lose absolutely all power, or just 'some' power (i.e. could you maintain 60 to 70mph with your foot nailed to the floor?)

Had exactly the same experience on the M5 last year with my 2.2. Equally unimpressed!
Warning light remained on after the event and the local dealer said the reading related to a 'torque discrepency' between engine commanded and actual power.
Reset and gladly no recurrence.
Not a pleasant experience sat with your your foot down whilst the car is decelerating in the outside lane!

Hi All - just an update, went into the dealers but they struggled to reproduce the problem. The only diag clues thewy could fine pointed at the fuel sensor - whatever that is......anyway they've fitted a new one and we'll see if it fixes it.

Their must be a syndrome for when a car has a new part fixed - it always seems to drive better afterwards....

I have had the same, but I loose all power and the fuel gague falls to empty and the fuel light flashes, no power at all, this can last for 10 mins or an hour, not good whn like you say your doing 80 or going up hill.

Addie at AHm has looked and we think it might need a new injector housing on cylinder 4

If there is still some power, allowing you to maintain speed (just turbo not going over 0.6), does that make it more likely to be DPF? Mine did this couple of days ago. I've got all power back and turbo and stuff, but the light's still on

An associate of mine had, from the sound of it, the exact same thing occur on his 2.0TDi Passat - okay, no similarities (other than being 80+ on the m-way and lost all power). Turned out that it was a dodgy injector, once replaced all was okay.

We actually got talking about this due to how much better old cars at handling this type of situation - you'd lose some power, no warning lights and the thing would run happily(ish) on 3 cylinders.... surely that's safer?

That shows where diagnostic equipment fails and personal experience counts.
If you use diag equipment as the be all and end all you will change a lot of components and still miss the bad connection.
I am so glad that we had to learn fault finding without all the diag equipment.

So... driving down the freeway at 100km/h (the legal limit, of course) and the car starts slowing. Eh? No response to throttle. Push the clutch, tacho drops to zero. No warning lights, engine not running. Gracefully cross four lanes of traffic (luckily not peak hour) and, in the left lane, happen to drop in the clutch before parking it in the breakdown lane, engine fires. Away we go... that was a couple of years ago.

Never did it again. Dealer checked for loose earth connections, etc.

Until a until a couple of days ago. This time I rolled down an exit lane, through a give way sign and into a private driveway with no engine. Trust me its a f-airly heavy car to steer with no power! Switched all off and on pressed the start button. All good. Drove it home.

Is this the Microsoft version of an Alfa?

Anybody know what might cause a petrol 3.2 V6 Q4 to do this? Seems to be constant speed running up around 60mph that is the common factor.

Confidence in the car is a little dented... perhaps it's time to get back in a Beemer.
