159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

Yup, that hoary old chestnut again. Not something I've been overly concerned with but given the rising price of diesel I intend now to complain to ARUK and AR Italy.

Tell you for why. I was told today that AR Italy are instructing dealers to remap cars to cure the fuel consumption problem. I believe that the remap upgrades the 200bhp cars to the 210 spec, which, from early reports, seems to have better fuel consumption. If AR are doing this in Italy, they should be doing it here also.

I thought if we could organise a campaign along the lines of the 2.2JTS Hesitation thread we might have some success. So I will be emailing ARUK and AR Italy to complain and I would urge other 2.4 Brera and 159 drivers to do likewise.

Also, could I ask a mod to make this thread a sticky please.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

Sorry if this info. is available eslewhere but what is the difference in average mpg between the 200 and 210bhp?

I'm getting 32 or 33.

Would this make a remap on the 200 worthwhile?

I've heard high 30's for the 210. I'm getting 30-32, sometimes less.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

I've run my 210 since January averaging 1500 - 2000 miles a month. Much of this is motorway driving, some at limits that might excite a traffic officer but mostly within the 80 mph and just above range. Even with the odd short run thrown in, I (according to the car computer) will average about 32-33 mpg - it would take a conscious effort to reach anything like 35 mpg. In comparison to my previous car, a steady but less than delightful Volvo (with a 2.4D / 185 bhp), similar in many respects, this probably represents a drop of about 10-15% when comparing fuel economy. But the Alfa drives so much better!!

OK, seems likwe the 210 isn't any better then.Maybe the Italian remap is something else. Still intend to contact AR and hopefully others will too.

@Simon - thanks mate.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

I have driven 900 miles in my 159 2.4 averaging 31/32 mpg and that is cautiously driving on combined roads. Still not pushed the car yet. The consumption is **** to be honest. My previous car - 2.0 150bhp petrol sri vectra 99 plate got more!!

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

The fuel consumption isn't the best but I get nearly 500 miles out of a tank on my 2.4 compared to less than 300 in the V6. Even allowing for the ever increasing price differential the 2.4 is more economical.
Having said that I try not to get too hung up about it!

Me neither, but the recent hike in fuel prices has made me think this is worth pushing.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

It doesn't cost much to pen a letter of complaint to ARUK, so its worth doing.

I wonder if any gains can be made through a non-Alfa remap?

I've heard up to 10mpg reported, although I'm a little dubious about that. Half that would do me just fine.

So is there a remap available if you already have the more powerful 210 bhp engine?

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

Thought it had been established earlier that there are actually significant mechanical differences between the 200 & 210bhp versions so it isn't as simple as an 'official' remap to transfer one to the other.

Yes, you can get the car mapped by aftermarket tuners (Angel, Red-Dot among others) to get c. 250bhp.

I've heard some say this is the case and some say it isn't; I've even had two dealers tell me it's down to a remap only. So the jury's still out on that one. I have emailed ARUK directly and asked the question.

This was my belief as well so it will be interesting to hear what Fraser hears from Alfa Romeo.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption

Significant changes to engine internals cost millions - a remap is low cost, so my money would be on that being the only difference between the two.
