TIA,
Mike.
Sensors in the DPF detect when it needs to burn off built-up particulates and fuel is used for this process. You can tell when it's happening because the engine note deepens and also fuel consumption climbs dramatically for a few minutes.

Not on the GT - Newer fangled technology that wastes fuel. No doubt it could be removed or bypassed - Anyone?

Now that's very interesting - must be a reason why GT diesel owners are getting reasonable economy in the main.
So am I hearing this right the DPF keeps the environment marginally cleaner but wastes loads of fuel in doing so.....genius
Love to hear how the 1st DPF remover gets on....be quids in

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption
From what I understand you are right - I have read that without the DPF the 159/Brera would gain 5 or 6 miles per gallon!

The 2.4 Croma had my first regen recently, I've done over 1000 miles.
I calculated it probably used about an extra pint of fuel.

Yup, no DPF in the GT.
The DPF removes particulates, which are particularly nasty and are responsible for a lot of respiratory illness. As you say, the downside is it uses fuel so the NOx and CO2 outputs are increased. It's a trade-off - health vs environment and since the particulate effect is more acute it's the environment that takes the hit.
It isn't a marginal difference BTW - particulates from a DPF fitted vehicle are zero. If you walk up Hope Street in Glasgow on a calm day you can see just how bad diesel particulates can get.

would require some serious re-engineering and cash to cut out the DPF and get the engine running correctly is the thinking...........

Hi Mike
Yes, it is something the car does itself. When the diesel particulate filter fills with soot it goes into a regeneration cycle which cooks the soot into ash. While it is happening the engine runs a bit roughly and the fuel consumption goes through the roof. You may or may not notice - I don't always.
Edit: sorry, I had forgotten that I had not refreshed for a while. I see that everyone else has answered for me.

Crazy - for those 2.4 owners getting only 30mpg that's a 20% improvement....what a silly waste....

Back on topic
650 miles yesterday - Alps, French Autoroute, Paris, M20/M25 - mixed driving (some spirited, some cruising) - 41.5mpg

Some interesting DPF blurb here...
Diesel Particulate Filter - Volvo Models - www.volvocars.com/uk
Especially interesting to see they don't recommend one for cars which won't get up to high speed - e.g. Channel Islands.

Re: 159/Brera 2.4 Fuel Consumption
Volvo use an entirely different system. You have to use an additive to the fuel; the system creates ash that builds up in the DPF meaning the DPF has to be replaced every 75,000 miles.

Not all of their engines, just the "smaller" ones.
"Because smaller engines run at lower temperatures, a fuel additive may be required to promote regeneration. This additive, Eolys, is currently used on Volvo's 1.6 and some 2.0 diesel engines where a DPF is fitted. The additive is a cerium/iron based solution that is added to a special tank under the fuel tank, which holds approximately 1.8 litres. Additive consumption is low and the tank is topped up as part of the car's regular service schedule."

Out of interest is there any evidence we are been killed by diesel fumes in the UK ?
I fully understand the thinking behind it all but smacks of the usual over-reactions so symptomatic of modern European society.

There's a huge amount of research showing the damage that particulates do and even some figures on deaths and hospital admissions. Admittedly not all particulates are diesel derived and the vast bulk of transport related emmissions are from trucks and buses, but they are pretty nasty things in very many ways.
