You're being a bit unkind to your missus.. The hook part is integral to the door catch mechanism, so there's little scope to break anything in there.
It has levers that are pulled by the external and internal door handles that make the catch open. They're connected by a rod and a cable respectively.
If you didn't muck about with the gubbins and BOTH internal and external handles are struggling to open the door then it sounds like the door catch mechanism itself is a bit sticky. I'd spray the bugger to death with WD40. It may loosen it up enough to get you through your trip.. but longer term I'd look for a new door catch.
