The PTFE tape seals compression joints in household plumbing systems, so if you do it properly it should last forever, never mind 30 miles.
If it leaks, it will just leak/drip. Put more oil in if the level drops... though it shouldn't leak that much with the tape.
If you're going to take the sump off to helicoil it, then I'd fit a new sump. If you get one from a breaker, you'll be able to check it's good before you remove the old one.
If the new one is equally knackered, then repair it before you remove the old one - at least you'll still have some wheels to take it to where it needs to be fixed.
