Close escape

Well my 155 has developed an oil leak from the rocker and its got worse over the cold weather for some reason.
So I decided to open up the timing cover to check if any oil was getting onto the belts and pulleys and I found to my horror that there were bits of shredded balance belt everywhere.
The idler is intact , although a little rough sounding, so I presume the belt hopped off after getting wet with oil. I did find some oil in the lower part of the timing cover where the balance idler is.

How the timing belt wasn't knocked off I have no idea, or for that matter I've no idea how long its been like this.
Anyway I've got all the shedded belt out of the system but wont get a chance to do the timing belt for a week or so.
Checked the timing belt and idlers etc and all seems in good nick (changed 30k miles ago)

So my question is can I drive the car with no balance belt?
