What oil should I use in my alfa silverstone 155 1.8 litre

Any synthetic based oil will do. I think 10W-40 is recommended by alfa, but for my 2.0 I use strictly 5w-40 (at 80c it's exactly at the right viscosity).

I found that Shell is excellent at removing the crud buildup...

Agreed, I always used 10/40 or 5/40...prefer 10/40 myself but either is ok.

In your engine (being slightly older) I'd probably go for the 10/40.
