Gearbox, gearbox, gearbox !!

OK, you can see I own a 155 1.8 16V

It will no longer go into 4th. When I try, it's like the gearstick hits a brick wall half way in and wont go any further.

Also, when I put it in 5th, it crunches ever so slightly, then when I dis-engage the clutch the gearstick pops half way out but stays in gear. Then about 5 to 10 minutes later it pops out of gear.

I've been told that the selector is gone.

My question is - which other cars share the gearbox of the 155. This is hopefully the benefit of owning a parts bin car. I'm hoping the Fiat Tempra shares its gearbox cuz they're 10 a penny and cheaper than a 'Hootie & The Blowfish' album.

Alternatively, is there anything that can be done to fix the 'box that's in it - the selector? Or is that too messy and labour intensive - I'm not mechanically minded.

The car is parked up now (I'm driving a 2.0 HDI Citroen C5 for anyone interested :P) so no further damage is being done.

Alfa Romeo A labour of love or a love of labour ?

Re: Gearbox, gearbox, gearbox !!

if your not mechanically minded dont even think about venturing inside the box. I recently exploded the planetary gears in my missus 33. after lots of advice i decided id have a look inside.... bad idea... changing it would be far easier. not much help i know

Re: Gearbox, gearbox, gearbox !!

Gearbox components on the '55 are on average 40 each. Since you don't know how many you'll need and then you have to add labour on top, it's usually cheaper to put a new gearbox on there, than try and fix the existing one.

There's enough 155s about that second-hand gearboxes should be "quite" available... I'm not sure what other Fiat group cars have the same 'box - as you say Tempra and Tipo may be a good place to start.

Re: Gearbox, gearbox, gearbox !!

Tipo/Tempra boxes are different- the 155 has bolt on driveshafts. I'm sure the boxes from GTV, Spider, 145 and 146 are much the same- but there are some different versions.

Do you know of any Alfa specialists how would source and fit a 2nd had one? I'd say that would be your cheapest and least painful option
BTW- I have one- but it very occasionally jumped out of 3rd on the over-run when really, really raggin' it- so you won't want that one
