Rear brake caliper b4st4rd!

Rear brakes giving me their 9-monthly grief again... (well.. there's an MOT coming isn't there? ).

So, I dismantled the rear caliper yesterday to see why it was sticking.

The near-side cylinder wasn't moving very much when I tried to push it back into the caliper body. The off-side was a bit freer but neither of the rear calipers are up to much.. may do a hose and re-build job on them...

Anyway, what's this I read about "winding back" the cylinder? Normally I just push the buggers back with my bare hands (or failing that, by biting on it ) but this time the n/s one didn't budge at all. Is there some "screwing" action involved? Which way is "in" and is there some special tool for it?

The buggers are determined to knack the MOT I just know..

And the exhaust started puffing a bit (only notice the brakes as I was looking for the hole). Should'a stayed in bed instead...

Yes, they need screwing in clockwise whilst applying pressure. Easier if you have a windback tool (Halfords 20 or cheaper online).

Usually a quick stripdown and rub with fine grit wet and dry cures any problem.
