There is a sequel to this.
I stripped the motor and removed the bearings,which are self aligning bushes (look like phosphour bronze?) retained in place by spring steel plates.
The bearing and bearing surface at the impellor end of the shaft had a lot of clearance (too much!).
I polished the bearing and the bearing surface on the shaft with fine wet and dry paper and swapped the bearings to the other ends of the shaft.
This reduced the clearance at the impellor end to a more reasonable level.
Lubricated with engine oil and reassembled the fan has run quietly since then.
This was a zero cost experimental fix which didn't fill me with confidence at the time but we shall see.
