My handbrake, which was never that efficient anyway, has finally given up the ghost.
If I adjust the cable (from the nut below the handle) to a point where the car will stand still on even the slightest slope, the pads rub when the handbrake is fully realeased, leading to a very hot brakes on even a short test drive. The actual handle in the car is leaning to the right of its hole, but this may just be bent due to the force with which I have had to pull the handbrake to keep the car stationary. I put new pads on a couple of months ago and the disks appeared fine then.
Has anyone else had this before? Where would be the best way to start looking for faults? I thought it may have been that the assembly at one wheel had gone, or that the cable has slipped off some tensioning wheel somewhere? Anyone got any ideas?
