Alternator problems updated?

A couple of weeks ago the battery light flashed up and everything slowed down until I turned some of the electrics off. Then on Saturday the light came on again everything eventually died and I was recovered home

Put a new battery on yesterday and that hasn't solved the problem

My plan of action is...

Check the wire between the alternator and starter motor (12v?)
Check the alternator initiator wire
Do I need to worry about the recifier?
Anything else?

Surely the alternator shouldn't pack up at 53k miles???

Re: Alternator problems?

Yes, measure the voltage at the battery when the car is running and everything turned off.
It should be above 13.5v. (more like 14.5v)
Then, turn on some lights, and blowers adn de-misters and stuff; and measure the battery voltage again.

It may drop a little bit, but should remain above 13.5. If it dives, it's your alternator, voltage regulator or rectifiers.
A local agent may be able to recommend a repair shop. I had my Bosch one in my Fiesta repaired in 20 mins.

Re: Alternator problems?

Well i'm getting quite good at screwing up

I admit I knew the pipe linking the power steering reservoir to the pump was leaking but I didn't know how much, it would seem that the fluid has tracked down the outside of said pipe to the pump, the pump is above the alternator and now the alternator is covered in fluid and it's stopped working

Any ideas......

Is the fluid likely to have affected the alternator or just the rectifier?

How can I test?

Can I simply disconnect the battery, power wash it and then let it dry out?

Any suggestions on what to do?

I realise it's a strange one and I doubt anyone can know the answers but I'd appreciate best guesses please

Re: Alternator problems?

Hopefully it's no worse than oil on the slip rings. It's not likely that the oil will have permanently damaged anything unless it's disolved the insulation on the windings. You could certainly try a jet wash first but it would probably be better to take it out, strip it and clean it thoroughly..

Re: Alternator problems?

The faces of the brushes and the slip rings could be glazed over (with the power steering fliud and the effects of heat).

In addition to cleaning the slip-rings the brushes would be contaminated with fluid that would attract dirt and dust that would make them stick so the brush springs wouldnt have any pressure.

Thumbs Up Re: Alternator problems?

Take it off and blast out the oil. Use Contact cleaner to shift anything you can't reach and then WD40 the whole thing.
