Probably nearer £1100 but still, I see your point.
It may be worth having a hunt about for a gearbox off a low mileage car that's been an accident write-off rather than a blow-up... trouble is, they're rather thin on the ground.
The point is, a rebuild is never as good as the real thing, unless you (know how to and ) do it yourself, change every part that is even remotely dodgy and/or trust the guy that did it to have been ultra-meticulous.
The rebuild shops don't "do" Alfa boxes are they're low volume. Instead someone (a mechanic) has to rebuild the dead gearbox if Mr Punter wants to use the good parts to "keep the cost down".
If they leave any component in there that's inperceptibly damaged, or don't clean the wreckage out, then it stores up more problems for later. I wouldn't get anyone to one-off rebuild a mullah'd gearbox unless money was no object.
Recycle a box off something as trustworty as possible and look at that clutch. Hopefully (?) the problem will be there and your pristine low miles gearbox can be tucked in the garage for later...!
