I have to agree with the other posts. Usually if there is a short, it'll blow the fuse straight away. The exception is if the short is drawing enough current to heat things up, but not enough to blow the fuse, which is probably what happened with yours. The dip bulb is 50W if memory serves me correctly. That's a draw of 4amps! The other thing that can happen is if there is a POOR connection. This sounds weird, but even a dodgy connection that has a resistance of only a few fractions of an ohm can cause a major source of heat where it shouldn't, particularly where there are large currents around (power = current SQUARED X resistance!) That's one reason why the car industry would like to switch to 24V systems; double the voltage, half the current...
