I have a `93 slim body 2.0 with the climate control fitted as opposed to the manual dials. Amazingly it all works. Never did in either of my 164s!
When i set it to full auto mode and the temp to low the fan goes to full power but the air isnt really cold as aircon should be. It must actually have aircon right?
Im assuming the system needs regassing but how much does that usually cost, be great to have working for the summer.
The Climate control in my 2.0 16 V works VERY well ( remember in ZA the average summer temp is 30 degrees). I suspect that the more you use it, the better is will work. Also, the GAS has an oil-based lubricant which tends to clean & seal the system, so if the A/C is used regularly, you have less problems.
The A/C on the 155 definitely works better than on the 156 btw
The A/C used to work great on my 96 V6. Then it gradually got less effective, then I p155ed about getting 'experts' to look at it who said 'it's the computer mate' so eventually I did the investigation myself and after wasting a lot of time checking the system I tracked it down to having no flippin' gas in it......experts. Pah
...got it re-charged for about £50 and the guy did a real lengthy leak investigation but we couldn't find any problems. It worked fine for about a month then went through the same routine of compressor constantly cycling every few seconds, cold air not very cold then just gave up again. Eventually found the leak though - it's somewhere in the area of the evaporator inside the car....so it can stay broken as far as I'm concerned - I ain't pulling THAT out to change a 50p seal, or worse, a £500 evaporator rad!!
One good thing that came out of all the investigation I did was I learned a wee bit about vehicle A/C...which came in handy 'cos I was then confident to install a custom system into my Stratos replica. Which works just fine
But to get to the point (eventually ), it's probably worth a quick re-charge and try your luck....but that's assuming it's got R134a in it. If it's an R12 filled system then you are looking at conversion to R134a at worst or one of those 'bodge kits' and an R12 substitute.
I've also got a skinny with the Automatic Climate Control, however NO air-con. Got all the bells and whistles on the display, AUTO and TEMP select (to a specific level in C) but it won't blow really cold air as it mixes outside air through the heater, so it won't be colder than the external temp.
Cars with air have an ECON button (to turn it off, saving the juice) and all many of pipes under the bonnet to and from AC compressoe and 'radiator'.
Hope this helps.
Yeah Ive got the econ button, and noticed the extra pipes, but couldnt see the compressor, but it is difficult to see the drive belts as they are quite hidden.
As an extra note today I have benn leaving it on full auto mode for a few days and loger journeys. Especially full cold(LO setting) and have noticed the air smell like a push bike inner tube!! Is this normal. Aircon has a distinctive smell but surely should be this
With all the fuss made about A/C systems, I've put mine on full blast today and the air coming out of the vents was as cold as ice!!!
I remember my A/C unit smelling a little over the last Summer when I started using it however today it did not smell at all!!! My only guess is that the extreme cold may have killed off the fungi or knowing my luck it may have sent the little begger in hybernation so that they will haunt me again this Summer
