ECU Diagnostic device / reader

Is there a simple way of reading fault codes from the later 16v cars? The simple accelerator method doesn't work.

From what I've found around the web, the ECU interface is similar to OBD (uses k-line), so the OBD hardware designs can be used but with different software.

Has anyone had any success with a homebuilt reader? Even just a few pointers as to what doesn't work would help.

Someone on AO had started something like this, so I'll mention it over there as well.

I'm guessing that it'll cost more than the car!

Oh well.

Don't know anything about hardware, but if somebody was able to make something there's a slim chance I could cobble some software together to read the device and interpret the codes. I'm just saying this off the top of my head at the moment though, it might be beyond my abilities, I don't know

Just a thought.

There should be a possibility to read out the error codes quite simply without electronic gadgets.

If the codes aren't displayed by the injection light, you must attach a LED, a resistor, some wiring and a switch, that should be attached to a connector (usually marked T2 in the wiring diagram).

Works on my P4...
