Driving the Silverstone along a dual carriageway on Fri eve, the engine sort of staggered twice for fractions of a second. I was cruising at about 60 so there was virually no throttle. A few miles on it cut again whilst under acceleration but for a tad longer.
When I got home I left it on tickover and it blipped a 3rd time only detectable by seeing the rev counter needle zero for a nano second.
I glugged in a tube of Wynns Injector cleaner but the tickover is now getting more erratic.
I poked and prodded under the bonnet but with my technical knowhow I might as well have asked the budgie. Nothing seemed to be lose or missing so
what the heck might be causing it?
Check your HT leads. Mine went funky about a year ago. The car idled ok, but when the engine was under load (accelerating0 or just general light throttle, the car would sometimes act as though the engine had benn turned off for a second.
It's also been suggested to me that a slight air leak from the plenum chamber and/or plumbing leading to it can have similar effect.
I'm told that spraying WD40 round that area with engine ticking over will promote erratic running if the spray gets sucked into a split or holed tube. That will point to the area to investigate further.
I've had similar symptoms with my 8v a couple of times...generally find unplugging everything and replugging everything along with copious quantities of WD40 cures it..Favourite on my car is the plug under the throttle body which always seems to be a bit loose...
If your stuck you could bring it over on Saturday..I'm only 5 mins away. I'm not a mechanic, but I do all my own work on my one and I can usually fix it when its playing up..
Thanks Dunc and agha33.
My + cable to the battery has a secondary bunch of leads going to a bolt onto the main clamp, and I have to say that that is now only a gravity fit. I have worried about that for a while so I will give it another look.
Re your good suggestions Dunc, I'll check them out over the weekend. Kind offer to have a look - I'll get back to you if needs be.
You were right JPW. I cable tied the loose part to the main clamp until the next service.
Hasn't missed a beat since.
BTW - using the Wynns Injector Cleaner has also improved acceleration and tick-over.
