hi guys ,jus been reading previous posts on this subject and sounds(rattly diesel type)like i need new variator and/or chain re-tensioned. Upshot is my mech skills severely limited so what am i likely to have to shell out to get this done? cheers Sean
If you want to re-tension the chain it'll take you 10 minutes and is easy.
Run the engine to temperature then switch off.
Loosen the chain tensioner lock nut. It is situated at the rhs of the engine towards the back of the block. If you look at the back of the engine behind cylinder #1 you will see a huge socket type thing. The lock nut is in line with this at the "gable" end of the engine. It is a 14mm nut.
Put the car in 5th gear and push forward smoothly about 10 feet (make sure the ignition is OFF).
Don't let the car roll backwards (apply the handbrake) and re-tighten the lock nut.
If in any doubt that the car rolled back or "jumped" when pushing forward, don't start the engine and repeat the process.
cheers marlon i'll give it a go.As for the variator JB u say its trickier than the 16v one ,is this just because u gotta take rocker cover off? or are there other reasons? anyroad i'm not doin it so what am i lookin at parts/labour? ta sean
For the 16v variator you got to take the inlet cam out as the variator screws into it and becomes part of the inlet cam assembly.. a wee bit of pooper. You also do it when you do the belts (in tensioner and idler) never gonna be a cheap job
I'd hate to think of what the 8v is if that's more difficult.
