Followed Trace in her 33 P4 up the dual carriageway this morning and noticed that very occassionally a small puff of dark smoke came out the exhaust. Should I be worried? This was at high speed, probably 4k or 4.5k revs in 5th gear.
My paranoid side thinks this is either a head gasket starting to go or maybe oil getting past a piston ring - perhaps I need thicker oil?
Or could it be running rich or something? I think it was black smoke rather than blue, but it was barely visible to the un-paranoid eye, so could be either.
hi Ben ,as you have just bought it i shouldn't be worried yet it might just need a good clean out .Oil burns blue smoke and water white so all i can think is that it might be a little rich or that trace is just seeing what that baby can do in first (sorry Trace)
as i can see we are talking about a 33.
if thats the case then let it be its normal and only fuel, try to hear the engine idle then it is runing wery uneven ,the fault is that it is a boxer that cant run even.but either way a boxer is a strong and solid engine if you keep it in shape
