Valve clearances

Is there an easy way to check the valve clearances on your car, or do you have to remove the cylinder head and check them with the head off. I noticed on the link how to change your variator that the guy showed a worn out cam which in turn made the valve clearances incorrect. Mines now done 165K and am wondering if the cam will be worn. If one of the inlet cams is worn and not opening enough then the cylinder may not be drawing enough fuel / mixture through making that cylinder weak compared to the rest hence my slight uneven running. Any thoughts?

Cheers wink

You don't have to remove the cylinder head, just the cam cover.

You can even check the inlet cam lobes for cilinder #1 through the oil filler cap. Changing the cam and the variator improved the running of my car no end. It used to run unevenly, with vibrations, and hunting a few times when going to idle e.g. after stopping for traffic lights. It's now much smoother, the way it used to be and is supposed to be!
