I have an L-reg 155, and was driving down the road today, shifted into 3rd and as soon as I shifted, the lever went really lose, I could move it a considerable distance, and I can now only engage 3rd and 4th gears, anyone got any ideas? If the box needs replacing I'll look for a 2nd hand or Recon, but I just want to know what is wrong!!
No reason to suspect the gearbox - it's probably just the cable linkage come loose at a joint. I've not had this problem so can't be specific but take the gearlever gaiter off and look to see if everything's connected at the base of the gear lever.
Then get someone to move the gearlever while you check at the gearbox end. This should identify the source of the problem.
I thought it was only the Q4 and V6 that had cable linkage, I think the others are rods, might be one of the bushes has worn and popped out. But I agree, nothing to suggest its the 'box, most likely the linkage.
Take a look at the end of the linkage where it hooks on to the gearbox balljoint.
It's a bit difficult to describe, but basically you've got an 'eye' at the end of the linkage coming out of the bulkhead which fits over a balljoint on the linkage arm actually on the gearbox. What usually happens is that the rubber washer on this linkage breaks in two and you lose gears.
If this is it, the problem is that it's a real bugger to replace. The rubber washer is best described as a bobbin , the upper part of which fits into the 'eye' mentioned above and lower part of which has a steel washer fitted. Once the new rubber washer has been fitted into the 'eye' and the steel washer pressed on, the whole thing has to be pushed over the balljoint which is nigh on impossible without some sort of press (maybe there is a special alfa tool to do this?) You can fit the rubber washer without the steel washer and get it all to work, but I wouldn't vouch for it's longevity.
Take a look to see if that's the problem. I can try to give you more details if that's it.
