Far as I know it never HAS to be changed, only checked. However I'm not sure this is a good idea.

I change it every two years.. it does get dirty and - if you do grind the gears like me when selecting reverse - you better change it because it is not good to have loose swarf running about the gearbox. The procedure is not that difficult although undoing the drain plug is a BLOODY nightmare!!! I had to sacrifice an allen key be sawing off a portion of it so that I could actually fit it into the hex socket of the drain plug to undo it!

Try selecting first or second gear before selecting reverse (no need to lift foot off the clutch pedal between selection) as this should prevent the crunching on reverse.
