Another opportunity to display my lack of technical knowledge presents itself
Recently my 2.0 twinspark has been making too much noise from the engine bay for comfort - it's sort of a belt-like squealing/whining noise as far as I can tell. My questions are, if it is belt related then presumably it'll be the drive belt, rather than one of the more crucial toothed belts (timing and balancer shaft)? I presume this because I can't imagine how a toothed belt would whine and squeal easisly. Also, if I want to check it's coming from the drive belt, can I simply remove it and start the engine to see if the noise has gone without fear of any damage when starting or needing special tools?!
I have many sleepless nights worrying about belts since the timing belt went on my escort eek! - I need to put my mind at rest on this one.
