Rev counter fix - unexpected results!

Had problems with the rev counter not working sometimes on my '97 16v. Finally got round to doing a search and found this fix had been suggested, which I followed...

I don't want to tempt fate, but it's been a couple of days without breaking, and looks good so far. However, something weird seems to have happened, and I don't know if it's just my imagination - since tightening these little bolts on the back of the instrument panel the car seems more driveable at low revs. Is this possible - is the ECU getting data from something in the instrument panel???!!! Seems weird...not that I'm complaining. Perhaps I am going mad and have imagined it all?!
