Handbrake mechanism seizure???
I suffered from “the blues” this morning when I went to drive off in the Alfa (2.0L 16V - 95MY widearch version) only to discover that the handbrake had seized. I can only say that I was stupid enough not to leave the handbrake off yesterday night considering the cold weather!
I’ve tried repeatedly pulling the handbrake on and off without any success; I also took the car for a quick drive down the road to see whether this may generate enough force/heat to overcome the seizure but it only resulted in that too familiar and horrible smell coming from the pads suggesting that I shouldn’t do that again!!!
I had to give up and get somebody from work to come and pick me up instead.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? The handbrake simply feels loose as if there is nothing working against it when pulling it off and then on up until the point where the mechanism is stuck. I don’t think the cable snapped because when I pull the handbrake on, I can feel the point where the mechanism has remained seized and I can apply more force from there. Since I was alone this morning I could not ask anyone to look at the spring mechanism on the calliper to see whether this had seized or whether it might have been the pistons.
