Tyre fitting A'level

What's the story with all those different colour dots round the tyrewall of a new tyre?

I have one wheel with a new tyre on it and it needed about 2kg (that's almost 3oz in the old money) of balancing weights on it to make it balance.

I remember reading that every tyre has a heavy spot that has to be fitted opposite the valve (marked by a red triangle or something).

I'm sure the 16 y.o council-estate yoof masquerading as a tyre fitter who fitted my tyre hasn't passed the A'level. The red spot is next to the valve on that wheel but at randon places in relation to it on the other wheels.

Tyre companies - why do they bother, eh?

as far as i know the red dot should be next to the valve on the outside wall of the tyre.

Maybe not that much - there's a row of weights about 8" long though.

I though the red spot must be the heavier part of the tyre as it's sort of next to the valve but the other wheels have the red spot all over the place, so I reckon that one was a fluke, if it's in the right place.
